Dog Rescued on Cliff Above Kentucky River

April 22, 2025

On Thursday, April 17th, a dog was found in distress on a cliff overlooking the Kentucky River in  Jessamine County.

Jessamine County Fire was made aware of the dog in distress on the Mercer County side of the Kentucky River palisades at Brooklyn. It could be seen stranded on a cliff about about 100 feet above the Kentucky River.

Mercer County Fire Protection District requested the assistance of Jessamine County For Rope Rescue technicians.  Members from Jessamine Fire and Nicholasville Fire, Jessamine Animal Care and Control and Jessamine Emergency Management responded to the aid and were able to build a rope system on a farm overlooking the cliff and lower a rescuer over the edge to make access to the Doggie in Distress.

A rescuer was chosen due to his experience with animals and he was able to gain the animals trust and apply a muzzle and a harness then secure the Dog in a litter and both were hauled back up to the top of the cliff by other rescuers  of the Jessamine and Mercer crews.  Jessamine County and Mercer County Animal care personnel were able to assess the dogs condition and found that the dog did have a chip.

They are working to assure the dog is stable and attempt to contact the registered owners. It is unknown for sure how the dog scaled the cliff or how long it had been stranded there. We hope that there can be a health and happy reuniting with its owners soon.
