Joseph "Joey" Banis from HBO 'Murder in Glitterball City' Lodged at Lee County Adjustment Center

Only two men — Jeffrey Mundt and Joseph “Joey” Banis — know exactly what happened inside an Old Louisville mansion the night James “Jamie” Carroll was killed in 2009.

The shocking case, which involved Carroll’s body being concealed inside a rubber storage container and buried in the basement of Mundt’s 8,000-square-foot Victorian home, is now the focus of HBO’s docuseries “Murder in Glitterball City.” The series is based on “A Dark Room in Glitter Ball City,” a book by Louisville author David Domine that chronicles the crime and its aftermath.

During their trials, Mundt and Banis — who had been in a relationship — each blamed the other for Carroll’s death. Both men testified that a methamphetamine-fueled encounter spiraled into violence, ending with Carroll being stabbed and shot. Each claimed the other issued threats against them and their families to force cooperation in disposing of the body. Prosecutors said Carroll’s remains were placed in a large rubber container, covered in lime and buried beneath the mansion’s basement floor.

Banis was ultimately convicted of complicity to murder, robbery, tampering with evidence, possession of counterfeit money, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is serving a life sentence at the Lee Adjustment Center in Beattyville and will be eligible for parole on June 2, 2030.

Mundt faced a separate trial. He was acquitted of murder and robbery charges but convicted of tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse. He received an eight-year prison sentence. After spending more than three years in jail awaiting trial, Mundt was granted parole in August 2014. Since then, his whereabouts have remained largely unknown. According to the docuseries’ directors, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, multiple attempts to contact Mundt for participation in the HBO project were unsuccessful.
