Former Beattyville resident dies in Canada on Garden City Skyway after wheel comes loose on the QEW

Posted

One person is dead and traffic was backed up on both sides of Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines after a loose wheel from a pickup truck crashed into a vehicle on the QEW span Tuesday afternoon, September 23, 2025.

The highway was closed in the Fort Erie-bound lanes at Niagara Street in St. Catharines and in the Toronto-bound lanes at Glendale Avenue in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

In a video posted shortly before 3:30 p.m. on X (formerly Twitter), Ontario Provincial Police media officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a wheel fell off a Fort Erie-bound pickup truck approaching the skyway. The wheel bounced into the Toronto-bound lanes, colliding with a Toronto-bound vehicle with two occupants.

The wheel then bounced off that vehicle and ended up over the bridge barrier, he said.

The driver of the Jeep SUV, a 53-year-old man from the United States, David Thomas (pictured), formerly of Beattyville, died at the scene.

His passenger, a 52-year-old man, was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Schmidt said.

Schmidt said travel through the area would be slow going for hours as there are limited nearby options to cross the Welland Canal.

“There will be a lot of congestion and frustration in this area,” he said.

David Thomas is a graduate of Lee County High School. He is a husband and father of four children.

He is the son of the late Billy and Arvada Thomas of Beattyville.
