2025 Adaptive Climbers Festival Returns to the Red River Gorge

Posted

The Adaptive Climbers Festival (ACF) is set to return to Kentucky’s Red River Gorge in 2025, welcoming approximately 200 adaptive rock climbers for a three-day outdoor climbing experience designed for individuals with physical disabilities.

Founded in 2018, the Adaptive Climbers Festival has grown steadily each year, becoming a cornerstone event at the “Red” for the adaptive climbing community. The festival focuses on empowering participants by removing physical and societal barriers, allowing climbers to experience rock climbing in ways tailored to their individual needs.

ACF is supported by a well-trained volunteer staff made up of both able-bodied allies and climbers with disabilities. The event operates in partnership with Catalyst Sports, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit adaptive sports organization. Together, they provide rope systems, adaptive climbing techniques, and specialized climbing gear to help participants safely reach the crag—and climb it.

The festival welcomes climbers of all experience levels. Some participants are trying rock climbing for the first time, while others are seasoned athletes, including paraclimbing medalists. Many attendees are members of local adaptive climbing groups who typically train indoors and are eager to build their outdoor skills. Competitive climbers also attend, looking to advance into regional, national, and even international competition. Regardless of ability level, participants share a common goal: learning from one another.

The event is hosted at the scenic Lago Linda Hideaway, where activities begin with afternoon and evening registration followed by a group dinner that allows climbers to connect in a relaxed setting. Participants camp on-site, setting up tents for the duration of the festival.

On scheduled climbing days, mornings begin early with breakfast, followed by adaptive climbing clinics and workshops held at camp or in Muir Valley. For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, open climbing sessions are also available. Staff members select accessible crags and set up rope systems in advance to accommodate a wide range of needs.

After a full day of climbing, participants return to Lago Linda to enjoy dinner prepared by the venue’s dedicated cook staff—bringing each day of adventure to a rewarding close.

The Adaptive Climbers Festival continues to break barriers, promote inclusion, and create meaningful outdoor experiences for climbers of all abilities in the heart of the Red River Gorge.
