HCTC students advance to nationals after big wins at state SkillsUSA conference

April 01, 2025

Hazard Community & Technical College (HCTC) students attended the Kentucky SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville from March 24-27.

During the conference, Kaden Adams, Ethan Campbell, Ethan Johnson and Michael Salvador placed first in their respective categories: architectural design, automotive maintenance and light repair, technical drafting and welding. The four will now advance to SkillsUSA Nationals in Atlanta.

All of the students placed first in their regional competitions, including Matthew Cook and Robby Higgins, who also competed in the statewide carpentry I and welding I competitions.

In addition to student accolades, Dean of Advanced & Professional Technologies Tony Back earned the State Advisor of the Year Award. All the advisors are very proud of the students and the SkillsUSA student organization at HCTC.

"SkillsUSA helps each student excel both personally and professionally," Back said. "As a SkillsUSA member, students build strong skills in leadership, teamwork, community service, professionalism and technical areas of study."

SkillsUSA aligns with course curricula in the technical and skilled trades, strengthening hands-on skills, preparing workers for the skilled trades and growing a highly qualified workforce of professionals. The organization provides students with opportunities to hone their personal, workplace and technical skills.

HCTC's mission includes empowering students by providing educational opportunities that lead to student success, rewarding careers and community enhancement.

"SkillsUSA directly aligns with our institution's mission. We work tirelessly to meet industry needs by preparing graduates with the skills necessary for high-demand, high-wage careers," Dr. Jennifer Lindon, HCTC president and chief executive officer, said. "SkillsUSA brings together Kentucky’s top skilled trades students. Congratulations to our representatives, who demonstrated their excellence and talent."
