Drivers urged to use caution as flood cleanup, damage assessment continues

JACKSON, Ky. – Drivers are urged to use caution on Kentucky roadways as cleanup, repairs, and damage assessment continue after last month's flooding.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) crews are making estimates of repairs, and in some cases work has already begun. In addition, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) crews are canvassing areas in which a disaster was declared for properties eligible for individual assistance. This means an increase in traffic on state and county roads.

     Two state-maintained roads remain closed in District 10, KY 80 in Perry County and KY 1162 in Morgan County, due to significant breaks in pavement. A number of other state highways, mostly in Breathitt, Owsley, and Perry counties experienced pavement breaks, slips, or mudslides. County-maintained roads were also affected.

     Below are driving tips shared by the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management to help ensure safety on the highways during the disaster response:

- Stay Alert: Be vigilant while driving and prepared for sudden stops or changes in traffic patterns.

- Watch for Emergency Vehicles: Yield the right of way to emergency and response vehicles.

- Drive Slowly: Reduce your speed to accommodate increased traffic and potential hazards.

- Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road and refrain from using mobile devices while driving.

- Be Aware of Pedestrians and Wildlife: Watch for pedestrians and displaced wildlife that may be crossing roads.

- Stay Informed: Keep up to date with local news and traffic advisories to navigate effectively.

     District 10 consists of 10 counties in east-central and southeastern Kentucky: Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell, and Wolfe. The district office is in Jackson.
