Man Takes His Toyota Camry for a Spin on the Bluegrass Airport Runway

On Monday, February 3, 2025,Steven Hockensmith, 51, of Lexington, Kentucky decided he was going to drive through a fence near the west side of the Bluegrass Airport’s property on Versailles Road in Lexington and drive on the airport’s runway, taxiway, and aviation ramp. He, then, proceeded to drive around several commercial and private airplanes before crashing into a golf cart that he backed up and ran into again before finally stopping the Camry.

Hockensmith was standing outside the vehicle and when authorities arrested him, and admitted to intentionally driving through the fence to gain access to the airport, according to authorities.

Hockensmith has been charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, second-degree criminal trespassing and two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, according to his arrest citation. He is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond, according to jail records.

Airport operations were unaffected during the incident.
